Natural close-up portrait of Antonio Benitez-Baldasari

Hi, I’m Antonio.

I began studying violin at approximately two and a half years old in Madrid. From there, music became one of the constants of a childhood spent moving between countries.

My early training continued in Tokyo with Suzuki Method instructor Kazuko Okamoto, and later in Bangkok, where my teachers included Italian violinist Alessandro Cappello. Over the years, my musical development also took me through orchestral leadership in Spain and California, intensive study in Granada, and further violin study at the Conservatoire royal de Bruxelles in Belgium.

I began teaching professionally in 2017. Within six months, I was promoted into music-school administration, beginning a parallel career in educational leadership that has given me an unusually broad view of how students learn, why families stay with music, where young players get stuck, and what separates a good lesson from a genuinely effective long-term musical education.

Today, I combine that background in my private teaching practice: serious, individualized violin instruction delivered directly in the student’s home.

A more personal approach to violin study

No two students arrive with the same goals, personality, attention span, physical habits, musical interests, or previous experience.

So I don’t believe in teaching every student as though they are the same person.

My lessons are built around the individual—while still maintaining the technical foundations that allow a violinist to grow confidently over time.

Thoughtful, Individualized Instruction

Lessons are adapted to the student’s age, experience, learning style, goals, and personality. When one explanation doesn’t work, we find another.

Strong Classical Foundations

Posture, bow technique, intonation, tone production, rhythm, reading, shifting, vibrato, and healthy practice habits are developed carefully rather than rushed.

Convenience Without Compromise

The lesson comes to you. Families avoid another weekly commute while students receive focused, one-on-one instruction in the same environment where most of their practicing actually happens.

Who I work with

Young Beginners

For children beginning their musical education, lessons focus on comfort with the instrument, listening, coordination, early technique, reading readiness, and building positive practice habits from the beginning.

Developing & Intermediate Students

For students who already play but feel stuck, lessons may focus on tone, intonation, bow control, shifting, vibrato, musical expression, technical confidence, and more independent practice.

School & Youth Orchestra Musicians

Support for students preparing orchestra repertoire, seating auditions, performances, challenging passages, or the transition into more advanced ensemble playing.

Adult & Returning Players

For adults beginning for the first time or returning after years away. Lessons are serious but never condescending, and are shaped around the student’s interests, schedule, and goals.

Good teaching is more than correcting mistakes.

A student can be told to “fix the bow,” “play more in tune,” or “practice more” a hundred times without ever being shown how.

I believe students deserve clearer answers.

That means helping them understand:

  • what is happening
  • why it is happening
  • what physical or musical change is needed
  • how to practice that change independently

Some students thrive on structure. Others need creativity and flexibility. Some respond to imagery. Others need mechanics and logic. Some need to be challenged more directly; others need enough trust and patience to stop being afraid of mistakes.

My goal is not to force every student into one mold. It is to help each student develop the tools, understanding, confidence, and musicianship to keep moving forward.

Lessons may include

  • Posture and instrument setup
  • Bow hold and bow control
  • Tone production
  • Intonation
  • Left-hand development
  • Shifting
  • Vibrato
  • Rhythm
  • Music reading
  • Ear training
  • Efficient practice strategies
  • Orchestra preparation
  • Audition support
  • Repertoire development
  • Musical expression
  • Performance confidence

Lesson content is tailored to the individual student. Not every student follows the same sequence or studies the same repertoire.

Serious instruction without another weekly commute

For busy families, adding one more drive across town can be the difference between music remaining sustainable and eventually becoming another source of stress.

In-home instruction removes that commute while preserving the quality and focus of private one-to-one teaching.

It also allows lessons to happen where the student practices most often. That means I can help address real-world issues involving:

  • practice setup
  • music stand placement
  • instrument storage
  • room acoustics
  • home practice routines
  • family support between lessons

The result is a more connected approach between the weekly lesson and the rest of the student’s musical life.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you teach complete beginners?

Yes. I work with beginning students as well as developing players, school-orchestra musicians, returning players, and adults.

What ages do you teach?

I work with children, teenagers, and adults. For very young students, readiness is considered individually, since attention span, family involvement, and physical development can vary significantly from child to child.

Do students need their own violin?

Yes. Students need regular access to an appropriately sized instrument for practice between lessons. I can provide guidance on rental and purchase options when needed.

Do you travel to every part of Sacramento?

No. Because lessons are provided in students’ homes, I limit travel based on location and existing teaching routes. This allows me to protect lesson quality, punctuality, and a sustainable weekly schedule.

Can siblings study back-to-back?

Yes, when appropriate. Sibling scheduling can be an excellent fit for in-home instruction.

Do you offer one-time or occasional lessons?

My primary focus is ongoing weekly instruction. Limited coaching sessions may occasionally be available for auditions, orchestra preparation, or specific technical needs.

Do you offer free trial lessons?

I do not offer free trial lessons. The first lesson is a full paid instructional session and gives both the student and teacher an opportunity to begin working together in a real lesson environment.

The right teacher can change a student’s relationship with music.

Whether the goal is to begin with strong foundations, overcome a technical plateau, prepare more confidently for orchestra, return to the violin after years away, or simply develop a deeper and more rewarding relationship with the instrument, the process begins with understanding the individual student.

About Antonio

A Musical Education Across Continents

Antonio Benitez-Baldasari performing with violin Close-up of Antonio demonstrating violin bow technique

Antonio Benitez-Baldasari is a violinist, private instructor, and music-school leader with nearly three decades of musical experience spanning Europe, Asia, and the United States.

He began studying violin at approximately two and a half years old in Madrid, Spain. His early musical development continued in Tokyo, where he studied with Suzuki Method instructor Kazuko Okamoto, and later in Bangkok, Thailand, where his teachers included Italian violinist Alessandro Cappello. During his years in Thailand, Antonio also performed with the orchestra at Bangkok Patana School.

Growing up across several countries gave Antonio an unusually broad musical education. Rather than following a single institutional path, his training developed through long-term private study, orchestral performance, international summer programs, masterclasses, and conservatory study in multiple musical traditions.

In 2011, Antonio attended Cursos Música y Naturaleza at Cortijo de Frías in Andalusia, where he was selected to serve as concertmaster of the student orchestra. After moving to California, he continued private violin study with Alla Oleynik and remained deeply involved in orchestral music throughout high school. At Jesuit High School, he served as second chair during his junior year and concertmaster during his senior year. In 2014, Jesuit’s String Ensemble earned a Superior rating at the 59th Annual Golden Empire Solo and Small Ensemble Music Festival, presented by the California Music Educators Association, Capitol Section, at California State University, Sacramento.

Antonio later returned to Europe for further intensive musical study. In 2014, he participated in the 30th Cursos Internacionales de Interpretación Musical “Eduardo del Pueyo” in Granada, Spain, where his experience included masterclasses and an orchestral performance of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony under conductor Michael Thomas. In 2016, he continued his violin studies at the Conservatoire royal de Bruxelles in Belgium.

He began his professional teaching career in 2017. Within six months of entering professional music education, he was promoted to Assistant Director, beginning a parallel career in music-school leadership and administration. Since then, Antonio has accumulated years of experience not only as a private instructor, but also in student development, enrollment, family communication, teacher support, scheduling, retention, recital preparation, and the day-to-day operation of large private music programs. Today, he works in music-school management and helps oversee the educational experience of hundreds of students and families while continuing to teach privately.

That combination of lifelong musicianship and professional educational experience strongly shapes Antonio’s approach to teaching. He believes that excellent violin instruction requires more than simply demonstrating how to play notes correctly. Students need clear explanations, thoughtful sequencing, realistic practice strategies, careful attention to physical comfort, and a teacher who can recognize when a student needs to be challenged, redirected, encouraged, or simply given a different way of understanding the problem.

Antonio Benitez-Baldasari with violinist Britta Natural close-up portrait of Antonio Benitez-Baldasari

His lessons are individually designed around each student’s age, experience, personality, and goals. Areas of study may include posture and instrument setup, bow technique, tone production, intonation, left-hand development, shifting, vibrato, music reading, rhythm, ear training, efficient practice habits, orchestral preparation, audition support, and the development of a strong classical foundation. Repertoire is selected thoughtfully and may be adapted to include music that keeps the student personally engaged while still supporting long-term technical growth.

Antonio works with children, teenagers, and adults, including beginners, returning players, developing orchestral musicians, and students seeking a more serious and structured approach to the instrument. His teaching style is patient but direct, with an emphasis on helping students understand not only what to do, but why it works.

Having spent much of his own life moving between countries, teachers, schools, and musical cultures, Antonio also understands that there is no single personality type that succeeds in music. Some students thrive on structure. Others need creativity and flexibility. Some are naturally confident performers; others require time and trust before they begin to open up. His goal is to preserve high standards without forcing every student into the same mold.
